The International Journal of Digital Research (IJDR) has published a new article in Volume 2, Issue 1 (2026): “Infrastructure as a Key Determinant of Rural Development in Petrich Municipality (Bulgaria)” by Shlyakov, Filatova, Gavrilova, and Pandurski.
The study analyzes transport, social, utility, and digital infrastructure and demonstrates that infrastructure is a key driver of socio-economic development, quality of life, and population retention in rural areas. The results highlight strong territorial disparities between central and peripheral settlements, while insufficient infrastructure is linked to depopulation and limited economic activity. Digital infrastructure remains the weakest component, particularly in remote areas .
The article is part of the Special Section “Rural Regions and Rural Development”, based on a scientific seminar held at Sofia University (17 December 2025).
